Danish EU Presidency: focus on the future of plant-based food

Denmark took over the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union on 1 July 2025. Launched under the motto “A strong Europe in a changing world”, the main theme of the semester is “Building a secure, competitive and green Europe”. We are particularly pleased that plant-based foods will also be highlighted in this programme.

Green transition in agriculture

The Danish Presidency has made it clear that it wants to support the green transition in agriculture.

Important elements of this are:

  • promoting plant-based foods,
  • promoting more sustainable protein sources and
  • promoting environmentally friendly forms of farming.

The presidency also aims to ensure that future agricultural policy supports organic farming, generational change and animal welfare.

Plant food: an EU action plan on the horizon?

It is particularly noteworthy that Denmark is taking the initiative to develop an EU plant-based food action plan. This could be a huge step towards a sustainable food industry, as plant-based products can significantly reduce the environmental burden of food production. Following the Danish success and the positive feedback, more than 130 organisations have jointly called for the European Commission to develop an EU-wide strategy to promote plant-based food by 2026.

The eyes of Europe on plant-based protein sources?

The Danish programme highlights the importance of diversification of protein sources as a key to the uptake of plant-based foods. The benefits of plant proteins are not only sustainable, but also environmentally and animal friendly, and there is a growing need to make these products more accessible to European consumers.

NGO support for plant-based food

A coalition of NGOs has already presented a detailed plan to the European Parliament proposing practical steps to develop plant-based value chains. This idea has the support of 5 political groups. This shows that there is a broad consensus on plant-based food.

Why is this important?

Plant-based foods are key not only for our individual health, but also for the future of our planet. As more and more people discover the benefits of plant-based diets, it becomes more urgent to support market development, research, innovation and consumer awareness in this segment. The plans of the Danish EU Presidency and a possible EU action plan could significantly accelerate the uptake of plant-based foods in Europe.

NÉGYOSZ awaits developments with great curiosity. If you are committed to plant-based food, to the plant-based transition, and you have not yet signed our Manifesto, do it now!
