NÉGYOSZ’s presentation at the Education Centre of the Hungarian Prison Service

Within the framework of the public catering project of NÉGYOSZ, our team was invited by the Hungarian Prison Service to give a professional presentation on the relationship between #meat-free nutrition and #sustainability at their Education Centre on 20.07.2023.

The #PublicCatering reform has a huge role to play in promoting and spreading awareness of healthier and environmentally friendly meat-free options.

In 2019, the EAT-Lancet Commission published a report stating that global meat consumption would need to fall by at least 50% to reach sustainable dietary goals by 2050.

The chefs are apparently new to meat-free cooking at the moment, but they have been very open all along and will soon be taking part in a #competition to learn how to prepare vegetarian dishes, and we have just given them some background on the importance of this.

In the presentation, we showed how important plant-based alternatives are for reducing our ecological footprint. The participants agreed with this in principle, but stressed the importance of legislation to make these actions mandatory for all institutions, which is not yet the case.

At present, several Prison Services institutions already have meat-free options on certain occasions (e.g. during Lent) or in special cases where a doctor has certified what a prisoner can eat, but the emergence of new demands for cooks requires further training.

We will also work to ensure that meat-free and all-plant-based options are introduced and disseminated as widely as possible in public institutions within the #publiccatering framework.
